Cookies
What are cookies?
Cookies are bits of information residing on your computer for a time, put there by the websites you visit and the webapps you use. They are used for all sorts things, like storing your preferences, as you move about on or revisit that website or webapp.
How do we use cookies?
The wiki stores a handful of "strictly necessary" variables in cookies - a session identifier, login name, whether you've consented to the cookie policy, two bits of data that the {!ctf} extension requires for related pages and personal recommendations. These are used to determine whether and how to send data to the wiki servers and handle requests for data from the wiki servers. The servers use the instructions they receive to process collated data and form a response that is then presented in your browser.
Your input, by javascript and cookies, is fundamental to the way the wiki works and what it is for. The wiki does not share this information with third parties, for example advertisers.
Privacy Policy
What information is being collected?
When you are logged in, a list of pages visited in sequence is recorded. When you are logged out, nothing is recorded. These lists are collated and used to produce related pages, what's popular and personal recommendations.
Who is collecting the information?
This data is stored for a time in databases on the server providing the wiki pages (i.e. your server). As new traffic builds up, old traffic is continually removed. The stored data is simply a filtered history as recorded in bits on countless other server logs (including your's), but the related pages etc is a way to make that data useful to you and others visiting the wiki. It is anonymised, secure and will not be passed on to any other services.
How is it collected?
When a logged in user clicks on a link, IDs are posted to the database as part of their request for a new one.
Why is it being collected?
This data is used to make dynamic connections between wiki pages, reflecting the bottom-up use of information rather than a top-down classification of it. The connections users make are combined and queried to provide personal recommendations, what's popular and related pages. This helps users co-learn directly from each other in a freely evolving shared information space.
This data in effect maps connections between wiki pages over time. The results of queries of that map (e.g. what is close to where I am?) are shared by visitors to wiki pages. No information at all is shared with any third parties.
What will be the effect of this on the individuals concerned?
The point of the wiki is to help users benefit from each other. The idea is that this low level, high frequency way of sharing helps users act more collectively and efficiently in their use of the wiki.
Is the intended use likely to cause individuals to object or complain?
It should be clear to users that they are using the wiki in order to share and learn together. Administrators are given all the tools they may require to remove unwanted material and unwelcome users. Ultimately, the wiki self-filters as traffic moves through it.
